The months of November and December were full of sicknesses for our family. We dealt with pinkeye (at least 5 times between 3 of us), colds, coughs, sinus infections, flu bugs, roseola, and some other virus that we haven't identified yet. All within 4 weeks. Luckily, 3 days before Christmas we were germ free in the house and still going strong two weeks later.
Needless to say, I was ready for Christmas to be here. I was ready for no sick kids. I was ready for the peace of the season to envelope my home and family. I was ready for laughter and smiles instead of puke buckets. I was ready for clorox wipes and tissues to NOT be on my grocery receipt.
My prayers were answered. Even though none of these trials were life threatening, I prayed my heart out. I have never felt so helpless and out of control about my family's health. It discouraged me like crazy and I kept feeling nuts because it wasn't like we had emergency rooms visits, broken bones, stitches, or worse, it was just common viruses. That lasted FOREVER. I kept thinking I shouldn't be making such a big deal about this in my prayers, but it was a big deal to me. It seemed like there was no end in sight. Then the faith of my little guy changed my heart...
After waking up on the 5th night in a row of throwing up, Jacob was crying and I could tell his little body was exhausted. "I hate being sick mom" he says. Then his face lights up and he says "I know! I can ask Dad to give me blessing!" So that night before bed, Cody gave him a blessing. Then I prayed again, but this time for my faith to be strengthened and to leave all of this in the Lord's hands. The next morning was the first 24 hour stretch he had gone without puking for a week and he was actually hungry. The first thing Jacob said that morning when he woke up was "I knew I would get better because Dad gave me a blessing."
My son taught me a lesson that day. Faith is simple. Ask and the Lord will listen. I have no doubt that the reason Jacob is better is because of the priesthood. I'm so thankful for how blessed I am and the reminder of what we are really here for.
